Finding A Lost Pet

If your pet does get lost, not all hope is lost, 93 percent of dogs and 75 percent of cats that were reported found their way home safely. There are a couple of things that helped achieve this results: a) the pets were microchiped (with their information, b) the pet had a phone number on their collar, c) they were found in a shelter and d) owners made public notice, either in online chat rooms or posted signs.

One of great things about dogs is their scent ability. If the dog knows the neighborhood, they may be able to recognize familiar scents (whether their own or other dogs) and find their way home.

If your pet is microchiped, and someone takes the pet to a vet or shelter, they will scan the pet to see if it is microchiped. When they do, they will be able to look up your contact information and notify you of the location of your lost pet.

Special note: When you obtain your pet, always ask if the animal is microchiped. If they are not, it is always recommended to have the procedure. Keep in mind, animals get lose, get scared by loud noises, chase after other animals, etc. and microchips increases their odds for a quick and safe return.

To summarize:.

  • Put a Name Tag with some type of information on it help someone return them to you;
  • Keep a current photo of your pet for flyers, internet postings etc;
  • License your pet;
  • Microchip your pet. This helps if their Name tag, collar comes off or is missing;.
  • Report them missing on internet postings.
